Free Webinar on "Interpreting climate information for water utilities"

Access to climate information is essential for any good planning and management methodology. The information needed for planning exists, however the challenge for water utilities is in interpreting and understanding how the information can inform, for example, their Water Safety Planning, particularly relating to hazard and risk mitigation. The webinar will explain how water utilities can use and interpret information from selected data sets (e.g. rainfall, temperature, etc.) in their short- to long-term planning to become more climate resilient.

The Flood and Drought Management Tools project has developed a Flood and Drought Portal with a package of web-based applications (tools) which support integration of flood and drought information into planning approaches across scales. This includes a data and information tool which provides global satellite based climate data and information for current and forecasted rainfall and temperature, flood and drought indices, and information on historical hazards.

Target Audience

Water utilities (operators and managers), water utility staff who are part of the water safety planning team, water utility staff responsible for source management.

Helps to have a background in water management, water safety planning, and ability to understand of climate change impacts.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:• Identify what climate information and data is relevant and can be used in your planning and operations.• Interpret and integrate climate information and data in your utility’s management of water resources and water supply.• Use climate information to improve your water safety planning implementation and development process by including climate related hazards and risks in your risk assessment of the water supply system from catchment to tap.• Contribute to the resilience of your water utility.

GIZ seeks Intern (m/f/d) Sector Program Sustainable Sanitation (WASH in Schools/Fit for School)

More than a third of the global population is still living with extremely poor or without basic sanitation. The GIZ program sustainable sanitation aims to promote sustainable sanitation in our partner countries through partnerships, consulting and networking. The team of the sustainable sanitation program is dedicated to scale-up existing sanitation approaches to improve sanitation for as many people as possible. GIZ is a partner of the international “Sustainable Sanitation Alliance” (SuSanA) and the GIZ program sustainable sanitation holds the SuSanA secretariat, which hosts the website and discussion forum where 10.000 international members (SuSanA, www.susana.org) interact. A worldwide initiative in schools, the so called “Fit for School” program (www.fitforschool.international), which engages children and local communities as change agents for sustainable sanitation, and the innovative SFD (often called Shit Flow Diagram) initiative, which visualizes deficits in urban sanitation to decision makers, are two additional core areas of the team’s work.

Deadline for application: 19 November 2018

Space-O Project consortium

Workshop on using Earth Observation information in water management

Vienna, Austria // 06 December 2018

Conference / Workshop

Starting in 2016, an international team of experts from EMVIS Consultant Engineers, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), EOMAP, European Dynamics, Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche (CNR), and the International Water Association (IWA) joined together to harness technology and tackle drinking water challenges through the SPACE-O project. The tools developed were tested in two pilot sites through the local utilities of Crete and Sardinia (Organization for the Development of Crete S.A., and Ente Acque della Sardegna). We have involved end users (water utilities) from the initiation of this project to ensure that our products are relevant tools to their operations. However, many other water quality dependent activities from recreation to aquaculture to hydropower can benefit as well.

The purpose of this event is to 1) present SPACE-O final outcomes including a water information and early warning system using Earth Observation data to provide information such as water quality forecasting (on reservoir source; and a risk-based decision support system (DSS) to enable cost-effective and environmental sustainable operation of Water Treatment Plants (WTP); and, 2) identify future opportunities for using advanced technologies to improve water management.

The workshop will be held in parallel with the ICT 2018 Conference.

Limited funds are available to cover attendee’s travel expenses, on a “first-come, first-serve” basis. If you wish to request funding support, please fill out and follow the instructions in this form. We will return to you confirming the amount and/or items to be reimbursed.

In order to plan our event, we kindly ask your response the latest by November 5th, 2018.

Ministry of Regional Development of Bulgaria

Strat. for Dev. & Mgmt. of the WSS Sector 2014-23

This draft Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) Sector Strategy updates and sets out for consideration by the Council of Ministers the main objectives and priorities for the WSS sector in the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as proposals for the implementation and financing of policies to achieve these objectives within a ten-year horizon. The strategy integrates the findings of consultations and intermediate analyses, including a regulatory review, public expenditure review, and strategic financing plan, produced and discussed with stakeholders since September 2012. Considering that many WSS capital investments have a long life time, both the expenditure needs assessment and the strategic financing plan were prepared for a 25-year time horizon. This provides assurance that the measures proposed in the ten-year strategy are in fact compatible with a sustainable WSS sector in the long term.
